Top 10 Android Games of the Week – August 19, 2012
This weeks list of the Top New Android games truly has a little something for everyone to enjoy. Two games from the newly released Humble Android Bundle made the list, and if Indie’s aren’t your thing you can still spin the Slots or save a few puppies. If you’re not a dog person and don’t like to gamble you can still have some fun by sinking pirate ships or hunting for hidden objects. Without further ado, we proudly present our picks for the Top 10 New Android Games of the Week…
Spirits is the first of two games from the Humble Bundle for Android to make our list this week, and it’s an awesome indie puzzle on every level. Your only goal is to guide Spirits to the portal on each level which is much trickier than you might think. As good as the gameplay is the graphical style of the game is what really catches and holds your attention and makes you want to help those rising spirits make their way home. We’ll have a full review of this one later in the week (it’s getting a 10), and if you like puzzlers that are beautiful and a little different you’ll definitely want to pick up Spirits. You can pick it up on Google Play for $0.99 or as part of the Humble Bundle for Android. Doesn’t matter how you get it, just get it because it’s that good…
As mentioned earlier this week “the hacking game” has finally made its way to Android and it goes by the name of Uplink. I’ll make this one short and sweet and just say if you’ve ever wanted to play a hacking game or played this on the PC back in the day you need to get this game. It’s only playable on tablets, and if you’ve played it on the PC you’ll know why Introversion went the tablet route as it’s the only way to do this great game justice. You can read more about it here, pick it up on Google Play or get it as part of the Humble Bundle 3 for Android.
I’m a sucker for slick games with a unique sense of style, and Pebble Universe from Itatake.com definitely has that covered. Pebbles are peaceful creatures who love to eat flowers and soot-lump creatures love to eat Pebbles. Therein lies the problem as you’ll have to fight back against the soot monsters and save the quirky little pebbles. This is one of the few games on the list I haven’t gotten a chance to play, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. Pebble Universe is a great looking game, and it’s free to download.
Social word games are all the rage these days, and Picsy is the latest to join the fray. Picsy stands out from the crowd though as it uses photo sharing and words to make things fun. You basically get in a game room and submit a picture based on the word chosen for the room. A judge or judges choose the best picture for each word and the winner wins the round. It’s a simple concept, and one that should be a big hit if my gamers intuition is on point. I haven’t gotten around to trying it yet, but it’s on my to-play list in the next few days. If it’s as good as I think I’ll report back with a full write up, until then you can check it out for yourself on Google Play for free.
5. Sink Em’ All
Since the Sid Meyer days Pirate games have been one of my favorite types of games to play. The newest Pirate game to grace our shores is called Sink ‘Em All! And if you enjoy launching crazy projectiles at ships then this is the game for you. It’s got 24 levels set across 6 chapters with lots of zany weapons and bosses with tentacles. Yup, tentacles. Right now it seems a lot of folks are having some issues with the game, but I will say the free version works fine for me although there are a few little glitches that could stand to be fixed. It’s only been out for a few days so if it doesn’t work for you now be sure to check back as it looks like a good one.
G5 Entertainment is well known for their Hidden Object games, and they’ve added another one to their catalog with Letters from Nowhere 2. This one is the follow-up to the first Letters from Nowhere and this time you’ll try to help Audrey find her missing husband with the help of the dead postman. You’ll get over 30 locations to search, lots of mini-games along with several helpful search powers. If you dig Hidden Object Games this one looks like a good one, and you can get it for free.
Everyone loves puppies… except for cat people, but if you’re a puppy lover chances are you’ll love Save the Puppies from Handygames. Save the Puppies is a puzzle game that puts you to work trying to save puppies that were picked up from the evil dog catcher. There are around 100 levels of tricky puzzles to work through, and scores of cute puppies to make you smile. You can pick up Save the Puppies for free on Google Play.
8. The Haunt
If you like “tap adventure” games there are quite a few to choose from, and if you like them spooky then you may want to check out The Haunt from Synthesis Design Solutions. The Haunt lets you point and tap your way through several creepy locales as you try and help the town folk rid themselves of evil spirits. I haven’t played this one, but you can check it out for $1.99 on Google Play.
Swak is generally known to be the abbreviation of Sealed with a Kiss, but the Swak’s in Atomic Turtle Studio’s new games aren’t kissing anyone and your job is to simply kill them. Kill The Swak puts your fingers to work destroying swaks, and if you dig quick play games it’s a pretty good one to try. There’s not much depth, but there are a couple of game modes for you to swak your way through.
10. Zynga Slots
Not much to say about this one except it’s a slot machine game put out by Zynga who’s put out some pretty addictive games. Zynga Slots lets you spin up to 40 lines at a time, and you can go for hot jackpots against your friends to snag the cash before they can. Not a big fan of play gambling games (like the real ones), but if you enjoy playing het slots you’ll probably want to check this one out. You can pick up Zynga Slots for free on Google Play.
